Effective July 1, 2026
An additional fee is charged for studies that require review by the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) at the University of Pittsburgh. This fee is assessed for new studies submitted on or after July 1, 2026.
The IBC review fee is charged in addition to any applicable IRB review fees. Studies subject to this fee will not be processed until the fee is paid in full.
- This fee applies to new study submissions only — it does not apply to studies already active as of July 1, 2026.
- The fee is collected by the Business Manager through the standard ancillary review process.
- Fee sheets must be uploaded into the PittPRO application on the Study Funding Source page.
- Contact the Business Manager of the Office of Research Protections with questions: sak168@pitt.edu
Important: Studies subject to the IBC review fee will not be processed until the fee is paid in full.
Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) Review Fee — assessed as an additional fee for new studies requiring IBC review, in addition to any applicable IRB fees.
$2,500
Additional Fee
Note on Combined Fees:
If your study requires both IRB review and IBC review, both fees will apply. For example, a new industry-sponsored study submitted after July 1, 2026 requiring Full Board IRB review and IBC review would incur a $3,000 IRB fee plus a $2,500 IBC fee.
Payment & Billing: Once a Fee Sheet is submitted and approved, HRPO will create an Interdepartmental Charge to bill your unit. An authorized department official must attest that their department takes full responsibility for paying the review fee.
- Fees are payable regardless of whether the study is ultimately approved, participants are enrolled, or the study is terminated early.
